The Best Time to Visit Marrakech (Month by Month)

Updated July 2026 · weather, crowds and what each month actually feels like

Marrakech is open all year, and every month is somebody's favourite. But they are not equal. The difference between a March afternoon in the Jemaa el-Fna and a July one is the difference between a great trip and a survival exercise. Here's the honest version, without the brochure language.

In one line: come in March–May or September–November — warm days around 25–30°C, cool nights, and fewer crowds than the peak. That's our standing recommendation and nothing has changed it.

Why spring and autumn win

Those two windows give you the thing Marrakech is best at: long, walkable days. You can spend a full afternoon in the souks, walk to the Majorelle Garden (170 MAD) instead of taxiing, and still have energy for dinner. Days sit around 25–30°C, which is warm enough for a rooftop and mild enough to actually explore on foot.

The nights cool off — bring a layer, genuinely, even in May. And an Atlas Mountains day trip (from 200 MAD) is far more pleasant when you're not climbing in 38-degree heat.

June and July: the hot one

Peak summer, and frequently 35°C and above. It's doable if you plan around it — early mornings, a long midday retreat, evenings out — but it will shape your whole trip whether you want it to or not.

Worth knowing now: June–July 2030 is exactly when the World Cup runs, and Marrakech is a host city. If you're planning around that, read our World Cup 2030 guide — you'll be arriving in the hottest window of the year alongside a lot of other people.

August: the emptiest hot month

The hottest month, and the one where many locals leave for the coast. Some places you'd expect to be open aren't. Unless you have a specific reason to be here in August, pick a different month.

December to February: cheap, sunny, and colder than you think

Winter days are mild and sunny — genuinely pleasant for wandering. The catch is the nights, which get properly cold. Many riads have no central heating, so a beautiful courtyard room can be chilly at 7am. Ask before you book and pack accordingly.

In exchange you get the quietest streets and often the cheapest prices of the year. If your priority is keeping the trip cheap, winter is your month.

What about Ramadan?

Ramadan's dates move roughly 11 days earlier each year, so it drifts across the calendar — check the dates for your specific travel year rather than trusting any fixed month you read somewhere.

The practical effect: some cafés and restaurants close during daylight hours, and the city is noticeably quieter by day. After sunset it comes alive — the food, the streets and the atmosphere are genuinely special. It can be a wonderful time to visit if you plan around it: eat where and when you can, don't expect a normal lunch, and be respectful about eating and drinking in public during the day.

Does the month change your budget?

Some of it. Accommodation is where timing bites — winter is often the cheapest, the good-weather months cost more. But the day-to-day barely moves: €15–25 a day backpacking, €40–80 mid-range, whenever you come. Food, taxis and entry tickets don't have a season. Full breakdown in Is Marrakech Expensive?

Common questions

What is the best month to visit Marrakech?

Any month in March–May or September–November. Days run around 25–30°C with cool nights, and there are fewer crowds than peak summer. There's no single winner among them.

Is Marrakech too hot in summer?

June and July are frequently 35°C and above, and August is the hottest month of all. It's manageable if you plan around the midday heat, but it will define your trip.

Is winter a good time to visit Marrakech?

Yes, with one caveat. December–February gives mild sunny days, the quietest streets and often the cheapest prices — but nights get genuinely cold and many riads have no central heating. Check before booking.

Should I avoid Marrakech during Ramadan?

Not necessarily. Ramadan shifts about 11 days earlier each year, so check the dates for your travel year. Some cafés and restaurants close during daylight and the city is quieter by day, but it's joyfully busy after sunset. It can be a wonderful time to visit if you plan around it and are respectful.

When is Marrakech cheapest?

Winter — December to February — is the quietest and often the cheapest stretch of the year, mainly on accommodation. Daily spend stays about the same year-round: €15–25 backpacker, €40–80 mid-range.

Does the time of year affect safety?

Not meaningfully. The main seasonal risk is heat, not crime. See our safety guide for the honest picture.
